I'd just like to know, where do you want to place a creative midfielder at? In a 4-3-3 between Lampard and Essien? Who is going to sit on the bench? Ramires?
When Boas changes the system into a 4-4-2, there would be no place for another central midfielder, even now it's going to be difficult to settle one of the actual top3-central-midfielders on the bench...
It's definitely a problem, ideally I think we'd play a 4-2-3-1, with Essien and Ramires in the holding roles and Lampard and two wingers in front supporting a lone striker, unfortunately Torres, who hates this system kind of rules this out (even though the way i see it being played is simply as a more defensive 4-3-3). I think the formation, either the preferred 4-3-3 or 4-4-2 will largely depend upon the players Villa Boas has to work with, both the new signings and existing squad. I have heard from some other Chelsea fans we should shift to a 3-3-1-3 formation with Lampard (or Modric/Sneijder/Pastore) siting in between Essien and either a pair of wingbacks or defensive mids and the three forwards, but I don't know of any major teams anywhere, apart from Chile under Bielsa and Ajax (sometimes), I don't think its a realistic option (there is an argument that this formation works well with a young team, which even after signing some young players this summer a young team we will not be). The other major problem with this system would be having Lampard as the pivot, I can see Xavi or Iniesta doing it for Barca, but I struggle to see Lampard doing the same for Chelsea (a player like Thiago or Fabregas though, there's potential).
As to today's speculation, first of all, more speculation about Sneijder, Mata, Courtois, Pastore, Hulk, Falcao, Rolando and Moutinho. The striker I really want, Cavani may yet leave Napoli it seems as Real Madrid, and both Manchester clubs prepare bids for him, I am desperately hoping Chelsea get in the game (despite the obvious presence of Torres, Sturridge and Kalou, the nearly signed Falcao and Lukaku and possibly Hulk, the post Copa Libertadores Neymar, and Drogba, who Villa Boas wants to stay, according to recent reports, for Cavani I'd be happy to offload a few older strikers).
Finally to the U17 World Cup, a great performance by Japan, beating Argentina 3-1, strikers
Daisuke Takagi and Hiroki Akino should be monitored as should French striker Yassine Benzia and Mexican forward Giovani Casillas.

Zitat von Manutd78:
Well, while a 4-2-3-1 seems to be unrealistic, a 3-3-1-3 (what the bloody hell?) is absurd.
How does a 3-3-1-3 look like?
Three centre backs defending behind three centre midfielders? Is this a joke? Who is saying that? He obviously played too much football manager games and the definition of a modern fullback appears to has escaped from his notice.
What kind of formation is that? 3-3-1-3? Three central midfielders and a playmaker behind three strikers? Sounds like a Barcelona-freak tried to make his team more offensive on Fifa...this is far from reality.
Well, this is going to be interesting, not a possible and ridicoulus 3-3-1-3...that's nonsense (sorry, if this idea is from some people, you know, but this seems to be a pipe dream, which will never become real).
First of all, I agree with you, 3-3-1-3 will not be an option, Villa Boas may be a rather creative manager, but not that creative. Now I'll explain it how it was explained to me, 3-3-1-3 is played with effectively three centre backs, 1 holding midfielders and two wingbacks or three holding midfielders, a central midfielder as distributor and three forwards, Chile's manager Marcelo Bielsa used at the 2010 World Cup, and previously at the 2002 World Cup with Argentina, Bielsa seems to be the only one who uses it consistently but several Dutch teams have used it on occasion. But Chelsea is nothing like the Chilean national team, and my friends who like the system (and also Bielsa's Chile it should be said) are thankfully not involved with Chelsea management, (though one does coach a local team, and he doesn't use a 3-3-1-3 formation!).
Zitat von Manutd78:
Villas-Boas is playing high-speed-football with players like Hulk and Falcao. This modern style of football is very stressful for the players and does not allow any system without fullbacks. You won't see that happening. What I tried to express was that Lampard is not the player, who fits into Villas-Boas' football philosophie. He's too old, too slow, too inflexible...He's not the player Chelsea needs to play the style of football Villa-Boas obviously teaches and the question, which is on top of all is "What is going to happen?". Lampard is an influential person at Chelsea; same is Terry, and both had their best days behind and won't fit into this style of high-speed football.
So, what is going to happen to them? Is Villas-Boas able to get his way of football? Will he have Abramowitch's back or do these players have a too big lobby inside the club and your new coach is doomed to failure before he even started coaching at Chelsea? And if he has the back of Abramowitch...what is going to happen to Lampard and Terry?
Its a good question, and the answer is nothing, yet. Villa Boas has a lot of support from Chelsea management, he's well known and well liked at the club as a former Mourinho assistant, but Lampard and Terry in many ways personify modern Chelsea, they won't be going anywhere this season. Villa Boas will ultimately be handicapped by this and other factors (such as Abramovich's insistence to play a role transfer policy among other things), but I don't think that necessarily prevents him from being a success at Chelsea. Ancelotti had to deal with many of the same issues and he won the double in his first season, Villa Boas lacks Ancelotti's experience, but he brings with him a range of other qualities, youth and dynamism, a working knowledge of the club from his previous experience here, he knows the players, well many of them, already.
As for his high intensity style of football, I'm a big fan of it, it's how the modern game should be played, Villa Boas won't turn Chelsea into Porto, but he will gradually be allowed to mold the team to fit his style (provided he's given enough time and control), this season we will see the beginning of that transformation, but many of the old guard will remain and that is an issue that Villa Boas will have to manage.
To today's speculation, it's the regular stuff about Falcao, Modric, Sneijder, Hulk, Moutinho and Pastore, plus we've apparently gotten back into the race for Alexis Sanchez. On the other side Ashley Cole is said to again be considering a move to Spain. We are also apparently interested in Brazilian youngster Junior Vicosa of Gremio and a Uruguayan youngster Santiago Garcia of Nacionale.
To the U17 World Cup, Uzbekistan's Timur Khakimov may be worth a look, while congratulations are in order for Chelsea's Nathaniel Chalobah, who scored for England against Uruguay.

A big few days in transfer speculation regarding Chelsea, and also a big few days at the U17 World Cup, some serious young talents on display and Australia is through to the knockout stages.
Firstly Chelsea speculation, the usual speculation about a variety of favoured targets persists, Eto'o, Pastore, Rolando, Mata, Aguero, Falcao, Hulk, Moutinho, Sneijder and Modric. Villa Boas has apparently contacted Alexis Sanchez trying to convince him to opt for Chelsea ahead of one of the Manchester clubs or Barcelona. Man U have also dropped a bit of a bombshell, tabling a 15 million pound bid for Thiago, (Barca won't sell for that thank goodness, but I think Chelsea need to table a bid, on the off chance that he may be released by Barca). Abramovich now wants Fabio Coentrao at the club, and is apparently willing to meet Benfica's exit clause to land him (which may hint that Ashley Cole is headed to Real Madrid). Chelsea have also renewed interest in Moussa Sissoko and Blaise Matuidi (I'm rather pleased with this). We have also apparently bid for the young Sao Paulo star, the striker formerly know as Marcelinho, who is now known as either Lucas or Lucas Moura (whatever his name he looks really good).
Tottenham have increased Modric's pay to try to keep him at the club, and it is being suggested that if Modric goes, Gareth Bale will probably follow him (and leave Spurs, not necessarily to go to Modric's new club). In more ridiculous (and rather questionable) news Real may again be open to selling Kaka, (given new attempts to sign Mario Götze) and Malaga have offered an 11 year-old Brahim Abdelkader a huge contract (the player is apparently wanted by all of Europe's big youth academies, including La Masia and Chelsea's new 'Hamburg' youth academy).
On the outgoings side, Essien has again been linked with a move to AC Milan (NOOOOOOOOOO!!!), while Drogba has been linked with a move to Galatasaray who would send Arda Turan in a swap, pity we don't want or need Turan. The other big Istanbul clubs, Fenerbache and Besiktas have previously been interested in Drogba, and recent speculation has it that all three are competing for his signature (in a swap with them, we could get Quaresma back from Besiktas, while Fenerbache has Andre Santos, Emmanuel Emenike or we could re-sign Miroslav Stoch, one who got away).
Onto the U17 World Cup, Souleymane Coulibaly ROCKS, we must sign him! (get Drogba onto it!), oh and in that game future Chelsea star Lucas Piazon, and promising Brazilians Adryan and Ademilson also scored, but Coulibaly was awesome! Germany's Mitchell Weiser, Okan Aydin and Samed Yesil all look very good.

Well, Coentrao does not seem to know where he wants to go. Last summer he's been in negotiations with Bayern. Bayern did not want to pay the release clause of 30 million Euros and made a bid about 25 million. This summer Bayern has been in negotiations as well, but Benfica didn't want to sell him to Bayern, so Bayern signed Rafinha after that, recognizing he'll be joining Madrid (and that's what have been told to me by an insider) next week.
Now it appears that even Madrid fails to sign him?? What the bloody hell is going on? He's starting a transfer saga, doesn't he? If he's going to Chelsea, football's going mad again this week (well there has to be any constancy at all...so it's madness at the moment...I'm ok with that). Cole is a home grown player (well, even Bendtner, Clichy or Fabregas are, so this is nothing special, but) Chelsea does not have so many of (them). Well,...Mancienne, but he's leaving the club for a move to Hamburg. Sturridge as well, but he's linked with another loan move following the possible signings of (maybe) Lukaku or/and another striker.
So where are Chelseas home grown players? Don't see any of them...To replace Cole with Coentrao is neither a loss nor a win of quality and just means Chelsea'd lose another english footballer.
Advantages are that he's portugues (like Villas Boas) and younger, but that's all...I don't see him stronger than Cole...he's neither a better leftback nor does he fit into Villas-Boas high-speed-football better than Cole in my opinion.
If Chelsea is ready to make that deal, they gotta improve their squad further as a result of a lack of home grown players in my opinion.
I'm very conflicted about this, I'm well known as a big Coentrao fan, but he doesn't really seem to be that interested in Chelsea, and you're right that if Cole goes that's yet another English player out, and an issue for our local player quota, from what I've heard Real Madrid may send a formal offer for Cole within the next few days, and with the potential change in his personal circumstances, he's trying to mend the fence with Cheryl, he may seek out a new club. As for the Sturridge, he won't be sold, but he will probably be loaned (and again loaned players do not count towards a local player quota...we really need to start thinking about things like this, and Financial Fair Play...but only after this transfer window ;) ).

Well...I withdraw my statement. This...is mad. Football becomes an Arsenal-kidfactory...this it, where it stops making any fun. This is disgusting...
I agree, and I'm glad, no matter how good a player he is that we will not be signing an 11 year old, if he's still a good player at 18 I'd be happy to have him, but Malaga are taking this much too far, it's exploitative and I hope his parents have a enough sense to say no.
Zitat von Manutd78:
Well, I told you months ago that Drogba is set to leave. Situation didn't changed so much, but Turan for Drogba? This is kind of strange and would be a bad deal for Chelsea. Turan indeed is a good player, I kind of like his style of playing football and Chelsea needs a good winger quickly, but I don't think Turan would fit into the EPL and that's all. He could strengthen the squad, but ... well, I don't know how to say it. He's not the guy who's playing on a top level...
Did you hear anything about a possible transfer fee? I'd like to know how much Chelsea would have to pay for him...10-15 million Euros would be a realistic price in my opinion.
From what I heard they're talking about a straight swap, they value Turan at about 15 million Euros, so I guess that's what they think Drogba's worth, from what I'm hearing Villa Boas would like Drogba to be involved in mentoring young strikers at Chelsea once he retires (which I think is really great), but that doesn't really mean we can keep him for three more years till he retires after the 2014 World Cup. Having said that, I see Marseilles as in the box seat now, they look like they'll come into some money after selling a few of their better players and Drogba's always loved that club (possibly even more than he loves Chelsea), I think it all depends on Villa Boas other plans whether he leaves in the summer or in winter though.
I also think Drogba has a really important role in helping Chelsea sign some of the rising talents of Ivorian football, Real Madrid are already after U17 World Cup star Souleymane Coulibaly (and we should be too, he's been awesome), there's also Seydou Doumbia, the (likely Arsenal bound unfortunately) Gervinho, Lacina Traore and Cheick Tioté.
Onto today's speculation, ridiculous suggestion we are after Karim Benzema aside, the regular speculation about Mata, Hulk and Thiago, plus speculation about 16 year old FC Cartagena starlet Hicham Khaloua and 16 year old Caen prospect M’Baye Niang.

Zitat von Manutd78:
Well, this is annoying. All these cheating footballers (such a good role-model) and all these footballers wives, who break up with their husbands....at least all these footballers leaving the country. No sorry, this didn't happen yet ... Ashley Cole is set to leave Chelsea, because he cheated on his wife?? Well this would be a transfer, I'd definetely would make fun of, trust me :D
Normally I'm just making fun of Arsenal and Manchester City, but this would definitely be in the race for the best transfer of the summer.
Last season when Cole's extramarital activities were exposed he was thought to be in negotiations for a move to Real Madrid, to get away from the English press...which is ridiculous anyway, the press followed Beckham to Madrid, why wouldn't they follow Cole? Apparently in the last 24 hours Real have either prepared a bid for Cole or Coentrao, there are conflicting accounts, and with Real Madrid the only club outside England who a: want him and can also b: afford his wages I think this largely hinges upon Madrid management and Cole's friends Terry, Lampard and Drogba trying to convince him to stay, at the moment, I'd put the probability of him staying at 70:30.
Zitat von Manutd78:
Well, I don't know why this is so much ridiculous. Real Madrid's squad is full of good strikers and Benzema is sitting on the bench for his maybe best years of his career there. To be in for him would not be as much as ridiculous as it sounds from you, because I still think he's one of the worlds best strikers and would especially alongside Torres be an amazing centre forward in the Premier League (well, let's wait...Torres is going to make the whole preseason and very likely at his best form again, when the season starts. Benzema would be a great addition with his physical way of playing still a high-speed football, which could be fit into Villa Boas' philosophy).
There was serious interest in Benzema back in 2009, back then, prior to Real Madrid really coming to court him it looked like Chelsea, Man U, AC Milan or the newly rich Man City would sign the Lyon prodigy, in fact there was talk of a double swoop for Benzema and Bafetimbi Gomis to replace Kalou and Claudio Pizarro. Following Benzema signing with Real Chelsea's interest dried up, where as the other interested clubs, continued to monitor Benzema's situation at Real, as he was overshadowed by Higuain and Ronaldo, (our targets became Pato, Aguero, Gervinho, Suarez who went to Liverpool, Moussa Dembele who went to Fulham, Seydou Doumbia who went to CSKA Moscow, Cavani and more recently Hulk, Eto'o and Falcao). Benzema was back to something like his best form towards the end of this season, and it now seems that Benzema who was gone in January, is more likely to stay than Higuain (or Canales, Morata and Sarabia, even Kaka), I'd welcome his arrival if he brought his recent form, but I think its very unlikely he'll sign.

I've got another question for you (you are the Chelsea expert, I'm not):
Some sources are claiming about a possible bid for Pastore. What do you personally think about this. I've got an oppinion, but I'd like to hear yours :)
I'm a fan of Pastore and I know we've been interested in him for some time, my only real concern is the price and his lack of physicality, talk is of a Torres esque price, 44 to 50 million Euros, which is too much, I would say 35 would probably be the upper end of the right price, and I'm concerned he's too small and would get bullied in England, but i think its clear management want him and if they can do a deal with Palermo, then he may soon be a Chelsea player.
Onto today's speculation, first of all the regular spec about the usual suspects, Aguero, Mata, Moutinho, Pastore, Sneijder, Thiago and Coentrao. Napoli apparently want 100 million Euros for Cavani (just pay it Roman, you're a billionaire ;) but seriously sign this guy!!!), Sergio Canales is up for sale and half a dozen English clubs (inc Chelsea will try and sign him). Chelsea, both Milan clubs and Real Madrid will compete to sign Paulo Henrique Ganso while Chelsea, Arsenal, AC Milan, Barcelona and Tottenham are after Casimiro. We are chasing Genoa's Slovak mid Juraj Kucka, but so are both Milan's, while Caen teenager M’Baye Niang, is not only attracting Chelsea's interest, but also that of Tottenham and Man City.
We will probably miss out on Anderlecht whizkid Charly Musonda Jr, who wants a move to Spain, Drogba may now be headed to Real Madrid, Abramovich has warned Milan and Madrid off Essien (excellent!) and Villa Boas' first signing from Porto may not be Falcao (as everyone expected) or Hulk (as everyone wanted), but Brazilian midfielder Fernando (the poor man's Ramires?).
To the U17 World Cup, the Joey's had a bad loss to Uzbekistan, though for Chelsea, Timur Khakimov again impressed, for Brazil Ademilson scored again, he too looks good, and the Japanese thumped New Zealand, with Defender Fumiya Hayakawa, midfielder
Hideki Ishige and striker Takumi Minamino.
Onto a round up of the Copa Libertadores, Victor Ayala of Libertad, Leandro Damiao of Internacional, Ganso of Santos (oh and Neymar of course!), Keirrison of Barca (on loan at Santos), Juan Manuel Iturbe of Cerro Porteno (now Porto, known as the Paraguayan Messi), Erik Lamela of River Plate, Alejandro Martinuccio of Penarol (who Man U are after) and Wallyson of Cruzeiro all look to have Chelsea or near Chelsea potential.

We won't sign Lucio, he's too old and if Alex does leave, we'll probably sign Rolando from Porto or Godin from Athletico Madrid, Man City, who've also been linked to Lucio on other other hand, may very well sign the big man.
Thiago has ended speculation about his future re signing with Barca til 2015. We have however successfully stolen a player from the Barca Academy, Gael Etock, a young Cameroonian described as the 'next Samuel Eto'o'.
So mixed news from Catalonia, and onto the rest of today's speculation, the regular speculation about Hulk, Kaka, Pastore, Courtois, Coentrao and Lukaku. Anzhi Makhachkala want Yuri Zhirkov and may use Uzbek star Odil Ahmedov as a make weight, though they also want Arshavin and have offered Ahmedov as a make weight (they don't quiet get this transfer lark I don't think offering, arguably, their best player for the old legs of Arshavin or injury prone Zhirkov?). Democratic Republic of Congo Football Director has apparently sought that Chelsea buy West Brom midfielder Youssouf Mulumbu (now that's bizarre!), Marseilles want to offer Lucho Gonzalez as a make weight in a deal for Drogba (again why would we swap a club legend whose over 30 for a reasonable but not great Argentine midfielder over 30? If they want to exchange players for Drogba we'll have Jordan and Andre Ayew or Cesar Azpilicueta).
We appear to have missed out on Anglo Mexican striker Antonio Pedroza Whitham, he seems near to signing with Tottenham (OK, if we need a Mexican striker we should get Erick Torres), and we're competing with Tottenham for Standard Liege's young Ghanaian fullback Daniel Opare.
Onto the U17 World Cup, the German's again impressed, with Samed Yesil and Mitchell Weiser starring and Nathaniel Chalobah again impressed in England's penalties win over Argentina.

Yeah I've heard about the links to Gary Cahill and Scott Dann as well, I've pretty much dismissed them, its not that we don't need a few more English players, (though a friend of mine pointed out that we actually meet and exceed the quota with, John Terry, Ross Turnbull, Ashley Cole, Frank Lampard, Josh McEachran, Daniel Sturridge, Patrick Van Aanholt, Rhys Taylor, Jacob Mellis, Sam Walker, Slobodan Rajkovic, Ben Gordon, we just have to make sure we don't sell or loan too many out), but Cahill seems pretty close to a move to Man City (or Arsenal) and Dann really isn't Chelsea quality, Villa Boas may surprise though (he's already surprising with the continuing link to Lucio, as one of my friends said he'd be Chelsea's 3rd best Brazilian defender and another pointed out at 33, he might be a bit young for Chelsea :D).
As for other speculation, there's more links to Eto'o, Mata, Pastore, Sanchez and Hulk, we've also apparently been linked to Sevilla's young star Antonio Cotan.
From the U17 World Cup, France beat Cote d'Ivoire, bringing an end to Souleymane Coulibaly's world cup, but he scored again, while French star Yassine Benzia scored a double.

Nothing much happening today, a bit of speculation about Lukaku and Nasri, but not much beyond that.
04.07.2011 - 02:25 Uhr
Again not too much happening today, more about Lukaku, Pastore, Falcao and Moutinho, heaps of speculation about a possible move for Theo Walcott (can't see it happening), more speculation about Scott Dann and Lucho Gonzalez. We are also apparently after 24 year old ADO Den Haag winger Wesley Verhoek and Ecuador Under 20 Alex Renato Ibarra Mina.
At the U17 World Cup Uruguay beat Uzbekistan with Santiago Charamoni and Rodrigo Aguirre getting the goals, while previous target of Chelsea interest Juan Cruz Mascia sat on the bench.

Some interesting developments today, we've missed out of Pablo Sarabia of Real Mardrid, who has signed with Getafe (wasting some of their academy talent, good to see we're not the only ones). As to other speculation the regular players continue to garner substantial interest, Mata, Modric, Pastore, Nasri, Odil Ahmedov and Aguero.
Davide Santon, Edinson Cavani and Leandro Damiao have all emerged as potential targets, while youngsters Dino Spehar from NK Osijek in Croatia, striker Miguel Angel Sainz Maza of Racing Santander and Alvaro Vadillo of Real Betis.
At the U17 World Cup, Brazil had a close win over Japan, with Adryan, Ademilson and Leo scoring for Brazil and Shoya Nakajima and Fumiya Hayakawa for Japan. Samed Yesil again starred in Germany's win over England, and Carlos Fierro scored again in Mexico's win over France.
